The First Amendment protects our most basic freedoms, including freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the people's right to assemble, and the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.  In practice, the First Amendment typically addresses the issues of defamation, privacy infringement, news gathering, and the Freedom of Information Act.  It addresses challenges with regards to freedom of speech including private speech, commercial speech, advertising, copyright, internet, and e-commerce.
