Employment Law

Basics

Employment law is a broad area of law including discrimination, wrongful termination, wages and taxation, and workplace safety. In addition, employment laws also pertain to job applicants and former employees. Federal and state statutes, administrative regulations, and judicial decisions govern employment law. Federal and state laws govern the minimum wage every worker is entitled to receive. These laws also identify which workers are entitled to receive overtime pay for working longer hours. Federal and state governments have also enacted laws that prohibit employers from discriminating against employees on the basis of race, national origin, gender, or religion.
