Copyright

Basics

Copyright laws protect and advance the tangible expression of an idea (i.e., a book, a song, a photograph). A common misperception is that one must “register” a copyright to claim ownership. This is not true. On the other hand, registration of copyright gives presumptive notice to innocent and willful infringers alike that an entity claims certain rights in the work and provides a panoply of legal remedies not otherwise available to the copyright claimant. These remedies include an award of your attorney’s fees against the infringer and statutorily determined damages for each infringement.

We offer advice and counseling on all aspects of copyright law and have expertise in visual and graphic arts photography and music.
